Root canals get a bad reputation, but they are a crucial part of dentistry because they allow us to save your natural teeth so we don’t have to extract them and replace them with an artificial prosthetic tooth.
When a root canal is necessary, it’s because the tooth is already so damaged or has such a large cavity already that the tooth’s nerve has begin to die off. At this point, we need to perform a root canal where we hollow out the tooth to get rid of the infection. After a root canal, the tooth can be safely kept in your mouth but it is now a hollow shell. This is why we will generally recommend a crown to be placed to protect the tooth we worked so hard to save.
Root canals also shouldn’t be painful, at Jamieson Dental we will make sure you are fully frozen before we proceed, and we have laughing gas available to those that are a bit anxious about the procedure.
